To be qualified to assess NVQ Certificates and Diplomas you need two things; a sound background in your own occupational area and an Assessor Award.  These new Awards (replacing Unit A1) are also ideal for those who assess against organisational standards and vocationally-related qualifications.

Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment – is a knowledge-only Award for those who are starting their journey as an assessor, or for those who need to know about assessment practice but who are not currently practicing.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment – is for practitioners who assess the demonstration of competence in a work environment using methods such as observation, examining work products and asking questions.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement – is for practitioners who assess knowledge and/or skills in vocationally-related subject areas using methods such as skills tests, simulation and questioning.

You may later wish to progress to become an internal quality assurer, and then you will need one of the new Internal Quality Assurance Awards (replacing Unit V1)
