Sally Furnish was my mentee when I undertook the Lancaster University Certificate in Mentoring, a programme on which I now work. Sally comes from an administrative background, and due to pressures in the business and a desire to develop her skills, she became a trainer for young apprentices who need to complete Key Skills qualifications as part of their qualification. She undertook some structured training which was supplemented by regular mentoring sessions with me in person and on the telephone. This extra support enabled her to develop and embed her new skills quickly. Time we spent reflecting on what she had done led to new ideas and understanding. She is now a full-time trainer and had an excellent report from a recent ALI (Adult Learning Inspectorate) inspection. Continue reading →

Paul Kendall came to Skill Training Limited in 2003 having worked all his life with motor vehicles. Part of his new role was to pass on his knowledge to groups of young apprentices, most straight from school. Paul was offered the opportunity to achieve his NVQ Level 3 in Learning and Development and he grabbed it wholeheartedly. He had not had any formal training in how to train others, especially this client group, and indeed one comment he made during his training was that he had never even considered how he learned, let alone that anyone might learn in a different way. In just under a year (from a standing start) he had achieved it. He now works for Springboard Sunderland Trust at their new Rivergreen centre in Sunderland. Paul works mainly with e2e learners using a motor vehicle project to help re-engage young people back into learning and society. Continue reading →

These are true qualities of Annie that have inspired not only myself to achieve further qualifications at 56 years of age, but several of my colleagues that have also achieved through Annie and hold the same view. Annie I wish you well for your future. Many thanks.

The book cover states that everyone has fears throughout their lives, and that this book will give you the insight and tools to vastly improve your ability to handle any given situation.

It describes the book as an inspiring modern classic, and although it was written back in 1987 and is very American in style, I was inspired when reading it. Two lessons were brought home to me which have stayed with me:

 1. You might have no control over what is happening to you but you can choose how you react to it
 2. Those panicky butterfly-feelings in your stomach that you get when doing something new or challenging can be a trigger to turn fear into anticipation or excitement. Sometimes just acknowledgeing that is enough to get you through it.

An easy read with some gems that stay with you. Continue reading →
